I prefer to play as immersive as possible, no TC if at all possible. I have plenty of free time while standing watch at work to slip and out of a sim. I prefer to save and come back as well. Action is important but it is not the foundation of the experience for me, if it were I would play a consol game and not go for the simulated experience.
I am new to the game so the learning curve is there. I hope to sink more than I am sank and learn from a controlled approach and branch out more after each successful patrol. .

Good luck on the 1X time compression thing. Just be aware it's a two week journey from Pearl Harbor to Japan at economical cruising speed in which 95% of the journey is just sea and sky.
