I played a Gibraltar mission in which I had maybe 14 ships over my head. I got away after some careful evasive maneuvers (flank speed and turning when the destroyer is overhead) and then silent running at 50 rpms to creep away.
It took hours, but I got away and the destroyers eventually dispersed. I checked the outside camera (this was a single-mission) and I saw a bunch of star-shells all over the place, but not where I was.
I think there were so many that they had to worry more about bumping into each other than getting a shot at me
