I have witnessed the "phantom destroyer" few times myself, once a British destroyer followed me back to Germany, where German escorts were waiting for him

I'm not sure if that is the case here. Basically it's possible that it saw me and started to investigate (chase). My strongest proof about this is that I made a single mission where destroyer spots me at 9000 meters and changes it's course towards me. Then I put flank speed and say bye bye to the destroyer which can't keep up with my speed. He should easily catch me but for some reason he doesn't go full speed and lets me slip away.
