If it's battles you're after, you'll need to know a lil history and pay attention to the lil movies you get while docked showing major events going on.
With RSRD I also start out of Manila as many large invasion groups invade the Philippines, usually you'll get patrol stars for these. By default you end up in Surabaya as home port, but Java gets invaded late Feb/early March, some very large invasion groups along the coast. I will then move to Brisbane ASAP if I can transfer there for the Solomon's campaign which will keep you busy all of 42, but Oct-Nov 42 just hang near Savo and you'll see large battles between the fleets.
There are many others, the Battle of the Philippines Sea is a big one in Oct 44. The good thing about RSRD is groups leave correct ports at the correct time heading to battle, so pick good ambush points where you can't miss them.
