That's exactly the reply I was typing out when I saw your post. Why condemn fellow sailors to death for no reason at all? Hadn't there been enough killing and death and destruction by this point in the war? Why contribute more in a completely meaningless and callous act?

Agreed. I think the reality of war and the futility of everything had set in for the commander and crew of U-2511 by this point. Fanatics would have had no place on my boat in this situation.

I don't think you're overreacting, but just realize it's easy for armchair captains to talk big and tough, but I'm sure that if they were placed in the situation, all that talk would be shown to be what it is - a bunch of hot air.
