Once I managed to import SH3 guns in SH5, together with an imported ship (the Nippon tanker). I did so because the problem of standard SH5 guns being pourly rendered on .dat units. The imported guns were looking okay, and working fine too.

I wonder if the same can be done on a .gr2 unit with no graphical glitches or other side-effects. Why don't you guys try to do a test with u-boat deck guns from SH3?
