Anyway, getting to the problem, I too usually get no replies from the patrol reports in the message box. I am using all of TDW's stuff it's great! Just the patrol report replies.
Maybe we could get TDW to chime in here if he's got any ideas why we have to check the Captains Log, otherwise it may be just one of those things.
As far as the sounds go, you won't hear one unless you have the boat set to TC1 on incoming messages. I have that setting on unless I don't want the constant interruptions. The sounds (I'm also using DBSM sound which is great as well) are really good, A "Morse Code type beeping" sometimes followed by the radioman calling out the type of message "intercepted enemy transmission" or "Message from the BDU", just great.
I hope we can get the little problem of the patrol replies getting into the message box fixed, otherwise just keep that TC1 on incoming messages on and you should hear the incoming sounds.

It's quite simple really. As I don't have control of the captain's log (game has control of it) I can't stipulate what goes into it nor do I have the ability to remove items from it. My radio messages I have complete control over. That said, there is always a % chance that the radio operator doesn't receive or intercept a message. Those messages that appear in the captain's log and not in the radio messages log are not supposed to be received. That's why I say if you have the radio messages engine running totally ignore the captain's log messages.
This % chance doesn't apply if the maker of the radio messages set a certain thing saying always received for that radio message.
