I don't think this was a GOP master plan, because I don't think the GOP leadership is that smart (as evidenced by the "sterling" candidates they are fielding, so far), but, I must admit, if the idea didn't sound like something out of a political novel, it would rate some consideration...
Plausible theory actually...
