Besides from the fact that if you've got a merchant between you and the merchant's escorts, the escort will sink the merchant, I've got another story to tell.
I was tiring of the lack of military traffic, so I went into the editor and added some destroyers and other forms of patrols troughout the Med and North Sea (I didn't know of RuB yet

).
So I start in the Mediterranean and track the destroyers I've created. An enemy merchant radio contact shows up and one of the destroyers comes so close to it that it must have made visual contact.
...And sails on. I make visual contact with the merchant, destroyer still sails on. I try to radio in the contact, destroyer doesn't care.
I sincerely hope there's more player-AI interaction in the sequel title
