It wouldn't even be necessary to be extraterrestial. Readily contagious bacteria or virus against which humans don't have natural defence would be enough. In today's globalized world where people travel around the globe we could have pandemia within weeks.
...or then its just big pond of hydrogen-dioxide and other elements.
