You are coming to the series at a great time. SH4 has been out for 5 years, there are many mods available for it. Game Fixes Only may be one you start with as it addresses ( as aptly titled ) stock bugs with the game.

From there perhaps try one of the other Super-mods, and there are 5-6 to consider. Check out the various threads and go from there.
