You don't actually
have to load up all that many mods to "fix" the game, TheDarkWraith's new UI mod will pretty much take care of any major issues and give you a lot to play with on top of that, but I think that, once you try that one and take your boat for a spin, you'll find yourself cooking up mod soups like the rest of us.
Anyway, your mileage may vary. Just don't be daunted by the mile long mod lists that some of us use, quite a few of them are merely fixes to uniforms, sounds, immersion, environment etc. that, while certainly worth it to add, aren't critical as such. You can always add more later and, with JSGME, even that's as easy as 1-2-3.
Plus, if you hit a stumbling block, you can always count on this community to help you out.
