Try a patrol or two with the Auto Targeting enabled. This will give you a chance to see how the pieces fit together .. eg.. target speed, your setup and sub action.
Use 'fast" for the torpedo speed
Especially in the Early war years, the torpedoes run way deep ... set the depth to the minimum it will let you set ~ 5 feet.
Set the exploder to "contact" the exploders were also error prone.
There is a great tutorial on the early war years torpedo fiasco (no other words can be used). The Newport Naval Station Bu Ord should have been summarily court marshaled! Having the Doors open and the speed/exploder set up BEFORE you set up your firing position takes away some of the hassle (and potential delay) during the firing sequence. Just be aware that every time you lock in a target (the L Key on the keyboard), the depth is AUTOMATICALLY set the the depth for the particular ship type ... you need to re-set it to 5 feet before you fire.
Getting a 'check-off' for mission completion has a lot to do with being on station for the correct time. When you get your orders, go to the Nav map and using the dividers, create a circle of the correct size (radius in miles) for your station area ... and stay INSIDE that circle for the correct amount of hours stated in the orders.
