Don't worry about sneaking off of your patrol area. While you get points for completing objectives, there is no penalty for not doing so. Sinking ships is the biggest thing in getting points. (I guess it is pretty much the same as SH 3; it's really up to you how you want to play.) If you send back status reports, you usually get new orders, so if don't want any specific orders, just maintain radio silence.
