For what it is worth here are my experiences:

1. If you are detected close to the entrance containing the net they will engage the net, closing the harbor. During my approaches where I have not been detected the harbor is open. On the flip side, once you are in and start blowing things up they will close the net and you either have to wait it out or find a different exit. At Scappa Flow there are other exits. If memory serves me right they are to the west and north.

2. Once the net is used to close the harbor you cannot go through it or over it without sustaining damage - often fatal damage.

3. Use the periscope to see if the net is engaged. You can view the net at close distance when you are submerged.

4. The other technique is to follow another ship through the entrance containing the net. I have not successfully used this tactic. Obviously, it requires precise timing it overcome the disadvantage of your slow submerged speed.
