AMC stands for Armed Merchant Cruiser. They are actually 'Rawalpindi' class troop ships (in the recognition manual) and show up as warship contacts (radio or visual) in the designated northern patrol area.
I don't know how you're supposed to now that, I did a fair bit o searchin to work it out myself, and confirmed it by sinking a few
.
There is quite a few about and they just generaly tavel back 'n' forth in the open sea. Don't be too blas-e, they're pretty heavily armed!
