Actually even that is a little short. The longest hit ever made on a moving target was by
Scharnhorst on HMS
Glorious at 26,465 yards, or 24,200 metres. You're right, they almost certainly wouldn't shoot at a submarine at that range, firstly because subs sit lower in the water and are harder to see, and secondly because they wouldn't waste their big-gun ammo on a target so hard to hit. On the other hand the US battleships
Iowa and
New Jersey did try to hit the Japanese destroyer
Nowaki at more than 35,000 yards, or 32,000 metres, so you never know for sure what they'll actually do.
