Now there are two things you need to do. First on the torpedo screen check the torpedo to see the actual range of that torpedo so you have some info to work with. The second is the range to target. You set the 'straight run' so the torpedo goes far enough to hit the target before it goes into the ladder. If you are shooting into a convoy, the straight run will hopefully hit the target, if it does not then it goes into the ladder and possibly hits something rather then just continue on in a straight line and miss everything.
