There are two main reasons why Jesus came to rescue mankind,
to free us from the bondage of our sin, that we might return to living in the Presence of God again.
Also to free us from our law. This is why he did not judge the rich man, but told him if he wanted to follow, he should give all his money away to the poor. Jesus could have quoted many OT scripture here to ram hope the point, but He did'nt, that would have been subjugating the rich man to law of the OT, but instead He highighted the rich mans problem, money.
When moses was given the commandments of Gods law, there were ten, by the time Jesus turned up to free us from this, there were over 600 laws people had to live under, thats without Roman law. We are meant and designed to live by consent, not law.
Jesus gave us friendship and fellowship with each other,
the Greeks turned His work into a philosophy,
the Romans turned His work into an institution,
Europeans then turned His teaching into a way of life,
the Americans turned the word into enterprise.
Back to square one, back under law.

hope this helps
The "Shootist" a great quote "I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, I won't be layed a hand on, I don't do these things to others, I require the same from them" consent in action.
