The designers of
Hindenburg were not dense. In fact they wanted to use helium, but at the time the United States was the only nation in the world which could manufacture helium, and we weren't about to sell to Germany considering the use zeppelins had been put to in the previous war. For
Hindenburg it was hydrogen or nothing.
