I confess it's probably the only Murnau I've ever seen, unless there's something I've watched that I didn't know was his work. I started to stream "Nosferatu" from Netflix once to see how that whole dealio worked, but didn't have anything connected up to the big TV yet and didn't want to sit at my desk and watch. I need to get back to that.
Liked your review of "Metropolis" as well. The first silent movie I ever managed to sit all the way through. I was never a big fan of the genre (and it still has its annoying quirks IMO) but I'm always willing to give a certified classic a chance. Turns out movies like that are considered classics for a reason, lol. As a big sci-fi fan growing up I'd been aware of it for a long time but was completely unprepared for how awesome it would be or how taken I would be with it. Got the most recent restoration on Blu-ray when it came out and it's really something.
I do think there must be something about German Expressionism that I like, but I don't know enough about it overall to tell you what that is.
Anyway it softened me on the silents, to the point where I don't cringe when one of them turns up on my Netflix queue. OTOH, the only ones I really watch are the ones on this or that "all time greatest" list and aside from Murnau and Lang it usually ends up being Chaplin, who I've also come to adore.
