I agree that auto-targeting will make it easier to hit. But I would expect that actually sinking ships will be harder, because auto targeting will send torpedoes into the same compartment with every shot. And RFB wants you to hit multiple compartments. Not only that, but auto targeting will aim for the middle of the ship, so you can't even expect to knock the engines out. So he'll be faced with using the deck gun to finish off zig-zagging slower ships. And the deck gun on RFB is not the same as in stock.

This is all my understanding, of course. And memory. More knowledgable players can feel free to correct me. I'm sure he can enjoy the game either way, and I hope he does. I would expect RFB with auto-targeting to lead to some frustrations that have the potential to turn him off to the game.

Probably the best progression would be:
1) auto-targeting, stock.
2) manual targeting, stock
3) manual targeting, RFB
