It didn't have any gondola which is why it wasn't obviously a "passenger" hot air ballon that someone was flying around town... some new athletic footwear store was having a grand opening and they must've had it on a tether of some kind and it got loose. Went through a similar experience at the age of 14 with one of those planes with an illuminated reader board on the wings at night. From a head on angle it like rotating lights on a disc. Flying saucers! OMG. I'm just glad the 'U' in UFO was quickly dispelled when it flew directly overhead and we could plainly see what it was.
