I'd suggest you don't use him. Those crew members have proved to be anything but reliable.
I can't say why, maybe they need training
but for me it's been like that.
Not using the assistance will learn you to gather the target info yourself so even if it's a more demanding way youäll gain from it.
And quicker become a skilled captain
