Yeah, I will be crying myself to sleep worrying about an O-8 with 31 years in.
Retirement pay of about $9500 per month with a 77.5% cap will give him a monthly retirement income of about $7,400 (before federal taxes). That's almost $90K per year just for breathing.
Add on to that the inevitable "consulting" job he will get and he won't be hurting much.
