It was one of the most notorious stories Adolf Hitler told: his First World War experience ended when he was blinded by a British mustard gas attack.

But a series of unpublished letters, seen for the first time since 1943, reveal the Fuhrer's famous boast to be a lie, dreamt up to portray him as the war hero he never was.

The letters show that the German leader's blindness was in fact caused by a mental illness, not the mustard gas attack he alleged.
