Sorry, but this is simply not true.
The AI does not know if you were too far away to identify the ship, and has no way of knowing whether you identified the ship's nationality (how on earth
could it know?)
I haven't sunk a neutral in a couple of years; it could be that they show up gray. But, if so, that color is programmed for the result. It is not programmed from anything you did or didn't do ahead of time, such as identifying nationality.
