Not sure if this is funny or just sheer dumb luck, but I thought I'd share it anyway.
I switched to manual targeting recently and I find it can be a bit overwhelming when in an attack where there are many targets. However, I had managed to get a good firing position on this one convoy five columns wide, but only three ships in each column. I am at the convoy's port side, aiming at the lead ship in the second column as seen from my position. It's a large freighter and a juicy target. So there I am, timing, measuring speed, distance (which is hard in rough seas with waves washing over my scope). Finally, I have something which resembles a working solution and I hit fire on a two torp salvo...only to notice that I forgot to open the tube doors.
Cursing myself for wasting a rather good shot by such a beginner's mistake, I lower the scope and begin to dive to evade the counter attack. After about a minute, the torpedoes are nearing the target and the event cam comes up. Sure enough, the torpedoes both miss the target astern...
Determined to reload and "get her next time round" I continue my dive when suddenly: "torpedo impact!". Oh, luck seems to be with me after all as one of the torpedoes apparently hit the second ship in the centre (third) column!
I switch to the external camera to catch a glimpse of what I hit and it turns out to be a big tanker that was hit mid-ships and is now on fire. As I am enjoying the fireworks on the tanker, suddenly another explosion: "torpedo impact!" The second torpedo struck the bow of the third ship in the fourth column! A mid sized freighter!
Due to the rough seas and I suppose the intense fire on the tanker, both ships took only minutes to sink (realistic sinking time is on). My luckiest miss ever!
