And that's exactly why you have catalogue references. They must have once known what each model was, at least when they accepted them in their collections. Hence they (usually) would have given each model a reference number in catalogue and painted it in the object, for example under the wing, a bit like you did.

The references make it possible for even a moron like me to check from the catalogue what each thing is and what we know about it, if I don't know already. They would also make it possible for me to actually work in the museum much easier. If some old hand told me: "bring me that model of Fairey Fulmar", I might look like this:

Whereas if he said: "Bring me that model AFM 173_4", I could do it on my first day at the job.

Don't mind me, I just love museum catalogues.
