The contact lines will not appear if you turn off map contacts.
You can replace the graphics for the contacts, and still have those lines. You will need to go into SH4\Data\Sea\ folder. Each ship in the game will have a directory. For example, if there is a <Blah> ship in the game, there will be a <Blah> folder. Go into the folder. Find the <Blah>_shp.dds file. Replace this (it's the black dot) with a blank graphic. You will also need to modify the non-player subs in SH4\Data\Submarine\ and the airplanes in SH4\Data\Air\ (or not. TMO already has those blanked.)
Next, you will need to blank out the graphics in SH4\Data\Menu\Gui\Units\ that show the square or triangle or circle for ships or planes or subs.
Check the lines in SH4\Data\Menu\Gui\ContLine.dds and DashLine.dds to make sure you've got good lines to use.
Run the game with map contacts turned on. The game will display the graphics, except they will be blank, so you won't see them. The sonar contact lines will show up.
