Go for the supercharger upgrade. You can go for the escorts in the early years but as time goes on you will want to save them for bigger targets.
I'm in 1943, and still use my deck gun when the oppertunity arises, but it's fire torp's most of the time (except when I'm sinking England's fishing fleet!)

Missing you kippers, Churchill?, Try some steel eel instead!
