Well i had a battle with two cargo ships which attacked me with their deckguns. My own gunner was firing too but he didn't really hit the ships. The tracers were going to the left in the ocean and to the right but not one hit landed at the ship. So they had enough time to call reinforcements and just a few minutes later two or three Sunderland planes arrived and were throwing bombs at my ship.
