I promised to get back to this thread, so here it is. I checked what I did to get it to work and I was surprised at how little effort it took, really.

  • Very important, make sure you get a recent version of wine! From wine version 1.3, it should work.
  • Next, install the game as you would in Windows, by running the installer from the DVD. I am running the EMEA version, patched to 1.4b. The DVD should mount automatically, but I am not familiar with Linux Mint, so I'm not sure how it works there. I have had success with Fedora and openSUSE. Install the Windows Media 9 codecs too.
  • Next, install the patch if your game is not pre-patched.
  • An icon should have been created automatically for the game. From that, you can launch it and it will run.
  • I set up some options in winecfg to allow SH3 to run a little more smooth.
    • I set wine to act as if it is Windows XP
    • I set it to emulate a virtual desktop with 1024X768 pixels, because SH3 can't cope with my native resolution. That means SH3 runs in a window, but that doesn't bother me. I am actually pursuing a convoy as I am writing this, which is not possible in full screen resolution.
I added GWX 3 and SH3 Commander the same way as I did on Windows. No special settings were required.

There are two glitches which are annoying, but I can live with them. YMMV:
  1. There are no visible fires or smoke when looking up close, only when zoomed far out. And I do mean far! This is actually more of an issue with the SH3 engine than with wine itself, but it makes the game less enjoyable.
  2. You can't actually launch the game from within SH3 Commander. If you launch it that way, it will complain about not being able to initialize the 3d engine. However, starting SH3 directly after that, it says it's loaded from SH3 Commander and any options are carried over. A minor annoyance.
I am currently in a career, in my 10th patrol and the game has been very smooth, no crashes or anything. If you absolutely need fires and smoke, stay on Windows, otherwise come join us on Linux, where all the cool kids play....
