Hey all. This isn't intended as a "wet blanket" post, so hopefully it won't be construed as such... but the enthusiasm of the OP got me to wondering....
There were a couple of (what I consider to be) serious issues with the game that just turned me right off and away during the first year after release, and I'm wondering if all these great mods I'm hearing about have addressed them. Sure, I could read through the 10,000+ posts in the hundred or so threads for the info, but... well...
The issues I was stuck on were these:
One basic sub type (Type VII). Have we figured out how to get others, such as the Type II and Type IX, into the game?
Variety of merchant ship types. SH3 and SH4 had dozens of different merchies. I believe the problem was was with the import. Has that been resolved?
The campaign (1). Scripted missions with crazy (not necessarily difficult, just stupid) success conditions... eg, sink 100,000 tons within the next 3 months, or go here and sink 2 CVs and 4 BBs. This as opposed to the more realistic (IMHO) sail to area X and do what you can with what you find there. Fixed?
The campaign (2). It ended in 1943. I think this was because they (UBI) wouldn't or couldn't add the tech and tactics needed to progress a campaign beyond that point. Are there mods for that now?
I know a lot has been done with the interface, the environment and the AI, but the above is, to my mind, fundamental. Without that, all of the good work that has been done by these guys is just wasted on *me*.
Again, this is not intended to stir up any old arguments or p*ss anyone off... I'm just wondering if 2+ years of SH5 has got us any closer to where we left off in SH3/4?
Thanks
JD
