It does seem strange that you can spot ships from 8km away at night. On a moon-lit night with no fog you could proberly make out large ships on the horizon, but being able to easily spot destroyers seems to easy...
I use the default water though because your watch crew can seem to see things anyway, so I don't want to be the only blind guy on board
