Start up the game. While it's loading look at the lower right side of the screen. If it says v1.4 then you're good to go.

To see radio messages hit the 'M' key.

3. I plan on installing the Grey Wolves mod at some point after I get used to the game. Can I do this with a Steam version? I'm running Windows 7.

Yes. There are a couple of tricks involved which I can't explain, as I only have XP and have the disc version, which is available very cheap.

On a general note, this game doesn't make it that easy to learn without a manual. The video tutorials are helpful as are the instructions before you go into the missions, but you have to remember them when you are actually doing the mission. Could do with a manual, but you don't get this with the Steam version

The manual that comes with the boxed version is crap anyway. But you do have it with the Steam version. Open the SH3 folder and look in the Documentation folder. On the other hand the manual that comes with GWX or NYGM will amaze you.

I've been looking for a great simulation game for ages that doesn't require big bulky hardware like a joystick or steering wheel and this fits the bill nicely, especially as I have an interest in German WWII history. Looking forward to learning this game!

As you progress you will find that there are a world of mods that make it ever more realistic and fun (if your idea of fun is sinking a ship once in a while and then sweating in terror as they try to kill you and all you can do is run and hide. Mine is.)

Thanks in advance, nice to see there is still an active thriving community for this game.

And thanks to Neal Stevens there likely will be for a long time to come. Welcome to the best community on the web!
