And yet it seems, even with your engines off if a destroyer gets TOO close (and sods law one of them did come too close), they somehow instantly know you are there. That cannot be right surely, is it a flaw in the game?

Doesn't take a genious to work out what happend to the USS Seawolf in the shallows of Manila Harbour!!!

I doubt that they saw you. Their capabilities are a simplification, which leads to odd results.
