I do not really watch regular TV to be honest but I am sure many people saw that JAG episode and where thinking "Korean War? man Hollywood comes up with everything these days."
Korea gets forgotten I suppose because it was the first "modern war"(police action, limited war) and was over shadowed by WWII on one end and Vietnam on the other.Few people know that Korea was a much bloodier war than Vietnam something like 54,000 in less than 5 years. Also once it became clear the whole thing was a stale mate the general public already began to put it out of mind I assume because it was clear that there was not going to be a total victory(all of Korea free) I mean Eisenhower got elected largely because he promised to end the war.Not say that what was done was in vain or anything like that and Korea was the first time the US fought as a fully integrated military the Army and Marines still tried to cling to the old ways but the Navy and the Air Force did not the AF was integrated from its start because the Act that made the USAF also made integration the policy of the military there there where was a black Corsair who crash landed and his wing also crashed to in order to aid him and that man revived the MOH though the black officer died from wounds at least he was not alone.Korea had the highest number purely altruistic MOH recipients there where several who stayed behind alone to face certain death so that the rest of their unit could fall back.It is one thing to go above and beyond in a sudden action it is even something more to willingly do so when you know for certain what is coming for you and still say that you will stay when you know that you are very likely going to die when you could easily fall back with the others and probably survive.
My old JROTC instructor was in Korea and he once said: "you do not know fear until you hear the trumpets of a Chinese human wave attack and see an entire hillside running at you."
Interesting side note: If you where ever posted in South Korea from 1950 right up to today you are allowed to join VFW.
