Yep, I started out using the full manual targeting. I never liked the idea of automatic targeting. Real captains did not have the luxury of using such a tool, so that made the decision easy for me. Full manual all the way; live or die by my own wits.
Don't get me wrong, though. That doesn't mean that I was any good at it. No no no. It was the exact opposite. At first, it was a world of frustration. Seriously, in the Naval Academy I could not hit ships moving at 2 knots. I was THAT bad.
But I stuck with it, knowing that it would probably get easier, sooner rather than later.
That was months ago. Since then I've learned all the angle calculation techniques and such. Sometimes it gets tedious, but after a while of that, it becomes fun. Once you can rely on your
captain's intuition is when the real excitement begins.
Though I know all of the calculations, the only thing I do now is the 3:15 rule. It's so that I can measure the target speed. For me, I just guess the AOB and range, and so far I've been pretty good with that. I hardly ever miss-fire a torpedo... If I do, it's because I should be sleeping rather than playing SH3...
