The truth is I enjoy every phase of the game. Not so much that I play entire patrols at 1x, but I do like taking the time to read the messages and see the sights.

Mainly because if it only slowed down when you saw an enemy ship then there wouldn't be any point in having friendlies and neutrals. It actually works that way in SH4 and it annoys me no end. There's no mystery or the thrill of the chase if you already know the conclusion. This is also why I never use external views except to take pictures of ships I've already IDed.
As for getting out of the harbor, I agree. It would be nice if the whole "ship spotted" function could be disabled at will, or at least while in port.
