I remember my first encounter with a capital ship playing stock SH3. A Revenge class BB in a task force going East into the Mediterranean (I was stationed at La Spezia) out of Gibraltar. I didn't believe my eyes when I first saw it.
As for GWX, at one point I was north of Ireland (VERY early in the war, Sept '39 I think) when I encountered a British task force with the Renown and Hood. The Hood was going straight, but the Renown kept changing course (maybe zigzagging, but it looked like it was trying to take the Hood's position in the group) Anyways I report in the task force to BdU (I had only a couple days prior received a telegram saying not to engage capital ships so we can try to talk out of the war) and close in, luck was on my side, the weather was clear and night was approaching fast. I waited for a response but soon I lost patience and fired my for bow shots at the Hood and the one after shot at the zigzagging Renown. All five ended up hitting the Hood and sent her down. I got within 400 meters of a destroyer that was probably pinging her heart out but somehow her lookouts didn't see me on the surface (You could cut the tension with a knife, I was waiting for the searchlights to all suddenly turn on and point at me as a volley of tracers flew out) and I was able to escape. Funnily enough, the British were able to dive down and surface the Hood, repair her wounds and restaff her in time for her as well as Prince of Wales to be sunk by the Same Kaleun as they steamed out to stop the Bismarck (yet the newspapers still credited the Bismarck with the kill...)
As for American ships, if you swing by Casablanca at the right time in '43, there's a certain U.S. super-battleship (BB-61 Iowa) that has just dropped off FDR after a trans-Atlantic trip (you can also find a Casablanca escort carrier here, too. You could also sink them as they are en route, but then you have to factor in about 20 DDs as opposed to a single armed trawler puttering around the port). Once I saw a Nevada class south of Iceland. I surfaced and said hello (the amis were still neutral). I was tempted to fire, but I knew orders to become a minefield clearer on the Eastern Front would be waiting for me if I did.
Edit: minor brain fart and used wrong ship name
