You have enough fuel and torpedoes to remain on patrol for several weeks.
After you have done your 24 hours you can freelance a bit.
In the Navigation screen you will see several pull down charts up at the top of the screen.
One of these is a map of the world with major shipping lanes/convoy routes. Feel free to do a little bit of exploring to find good hunting spots.
I tend to patrol my given grid box for 4 days, then if nothing is doing there I will move to an adjacent box for 4 days, and so on until I am down to about 20% fuel or have no torpedoes left.
Others here will just completely freelance from the word go and head straight to their favorite grid.
How you play it is entirely up to you
But I would suggest you stay out for several weeks.

hey Max, you are a breath of fresh air, in regard to the 'esc' key, well I feel like a total dunce now (hanging head in shame) but hey ho not everyone knows everything right, I did search my game manual on how to dock, but to no avail, unless I never looked hard enough and I know I could have searched this forum, but I am glad I posted in my query now.
Though I had wondered whilst I was hunting the dark waters, well in my sub there is large clumps of meat hanging in the main station & fruit to ect, I was wondering, if the lads back in the day ever got food poisening, as am sure the meat must have gone off from time to time, did they not have any real refridgeration then, or had they not invented them yet?
But where you have mentioned up there about the pull down charts with the major shipping lanes/convoy routes ect, well when I was on my first mission (CA29) I never once saw any enemy ships, not a dicky bird and I wondered if may be my game had gotten a bug or something, but I reassured myself on that anyway, as on the single missions mode, well there is plenty. But yeh, thanks for the tip about the major shipping lanes/convoy routes, nice tip.
I don't suppose you know anything about multiplayer, as I was having problems getting online via the multiplayer option, then after managing to get online and reaching an actual games room, well someone kept telling me that I needed to ping them? I did ask what they meant by that, but I was just kicked out the room lol and I have not yet played online, I have tried searching what pinging someone means in a games room, but again to no avail, am sure it will be somewhere in this forum, but where exactly do I go to read about all the necessary information that I need to equip myself as so to know 'exactly' what to do when inside a games room, without the hassle of being called an idiot and being kicked out to lol.
But all in all thank you to the high heavens for your brilliant feedback
