Yeah wise enough, as for me
1. The purchase price
2. Whether the quality matches the purchase price or even exceed my expectation.
3. Desirability. If I think it's good for my longevity I'll buy it
I'm not going to buy anything for my hobby which I consider below my quality expectation. I mean I buy hobby stuffs because I like them so I will not settle on buying less than desirable quality hobby stuffs. If I can't afford it I will not buy it or save the money to get it later if it's too good to be passed.
what I avoid is usually toyish look of model. I scrutinized a Hobby Master MiG-21MF yesterday and it was tagged at US$45.00 and I must say it looked awfully toyish. The panel lines are quite a shame. I would not buy it even at half the price.
Of course toyish look can still be forgiven for diecast otherwise diecast would not have a chance. It can be redeemed by any other quality characteristic or feel other than just look. The older Minichamp tanks that I collect for example won my love for its weighty feel and independent wheel suspension.
But I must admit for look and look alone, I think model kit has the upper hand hands down plus the customization. The downside that it takes much effort, patience and time and it's very very vulnerable that a case is a must unless you want to see it destroyed in the next 5 year.
