While you are technically correct, a quick glance at any decent dictionary will tell you that "thing" is also accepted as a term for items indefinable or spiritual, so are not limited to physical objects. A good thesaurus will show that there are a great many synonyms for "thing".
Second, "lost in translation" is a common phrase, and considered acceptable usage, so your objection is over the technical detail and not the true use of the words involved.
