Fascinating story. How close were you to an enemy port? I seem to recall some few details about there being sort of "roaming" mines which moved with the currents and which were placed strategically so that likely enemy merchant shipping would encounter them. If you were near a port it seems likely. Im curious however as to whether or not there was an explosion like that of a torpedo. Usually they make a real light show.
Crazy stuff though.
