Okay, I'll apologize, mainly because, while you tick me off from time to time, you have a great sense of humor about it. While your comparison may or may not be true, it sounded like a slam to me, and I'll stand by my statement in that regard. And SH3 really was released in March 2005, only six years ago.
To be honest, I know a lot of the people who still prefer SH3 over SH5, and for most of them the reality is that SH5 still doesn't offer what they're looking for. I can see why people who have dedicated themselves to improving SH5 wish that others would do so too, but the flip side is that a lot of the people who still mod SH3 don't have the skills to create Type IXs for SH5, and are waiting for someone else to do that before they make the switch. For them to work on SH5 now would be fruitless, so they stick with what they know. It's not about being locked into something, or being stuck in the past. I have no reason to play SH5 until I can start in August 1939 in a Type II, so what's the point?
It's true that some people have tried SH5, didn't give it a chance, and said bad things. That was was also true of SH3 and SH4. It will happen. On the other hand, why did the Beatles break up? Huh? What does that have to do with anything? Well, I'll tell you what it has to do with SH5. You see, the Beatles didn't break up because of Paul, or because of John, or even because of Yoko. The Beatles broke up because creative people are insecure people. They are also self-centered, arrogant people. This means that creative people are offensive people, and are also easily offended people. They tend to take things very personally and lash out at anyone who shows the slightest disrespect for their babies.
The people who ask what happened lately and say these used to be nice polite forums weren't here for the start of Beery's Real U-Boat mod and the great 'Deck-Gun Rate-Of-Fire' debates. They weren't here for the great mod wars of 2006. There is still a great deal of secret hostility over that one, and sometimes it becomes not-so-secret. And it won't ever stop until creative people stop being arrogant, pushy, hyper-sensitive jackwagons. And that will never happen, because it can't. It's in the genes, and to eliminate one would destroy the other. I know this, because after all these years I still play in a band, and though we've grown and matured over those years it still crops up from time to time, and it still gives me ulcers.
You see, I'm not creative. I am intelligent and fairly well educated, but in forty years of playing music I've written maybe a dozen songs. I allegedly have some "mods" for SH3. They consist of converting some talented peoples' sound mod for SH2 into a format that works with SH3, and years of patiently cataloging ships so SH3 Commander will have lots of historical names to work with. A lot of dedication and hard work, sure, but no real talent involved. So I sit on the fringes and cheer for mods, and try to help where I can, but I also watch when the talented people take it personally when other talented people, or untalented people, say anything negative about their favorite subject, and react in a totally inapropriate manner. Sometimes someone will say something negative about this game or that, and it's a legitimate complaint about something that needs fixing, I'm right there with them. And every time someone says something mocking or dismissive about this game or that, well, my stomach hurts. I take every such comment personally, because I like all the games.
So I'll apologize for overreacting, but I'll continue to do so in every forum I see it happen in.
Oh, and concerning SH6, since each incarnation of Silent Hunter seems to get worse (speaking of the out-of-the-box release of course), and seems to require more and more fixing by the people who should be improving the games, not fixing them, why would anyone want there to be another one?
