The very first funny picture made casual reference to a character called Bernard. Sometimes mistaken for Bernhard, or even Birdnard, Bernard began to be noticed by others, mainly for his lack of understanding of...well, pretty much everything. This led to his becoming the laughingstock of SubSim, and to his elevation to his current position of butt-of-all-jokes, as Haji-Baba Jimbuna so eloquently pointed out.

The bottom line is that today we use Bernard as a whipping boy for our own mistakes. It's good to have someone to blame.
