I can't even begin to guess how many of our alleged "problems" would go the hell away if we (collective "we", not 'Subsim we') would just stop reacting, and start pro-acting.
FFS, we are a nation that put a whole bunch of dudes on the MOON, once we decided to do it. We've played a gigantic part in creating the global telecommunications industry. We built THOUSANDS of tanks, ships, and aircraft in FOUR YEARS, coinciding with a WAR.
We are capable of some amazing displays of technical prowess, production capacity, and great courage. Or at least, we were. I'm beginning to wonder a little as I watch these succeeding generations growing up "kinder & gentler" and less willing to sweat.
It feels to me that we settle today for petty squabbling amongst ourselves over which political party is more corrupt or who's on what "reality television" program. We allow our "leaders" to create "laws" to protect us, when all we really need to protect ourselves is a little damned sense. We have far more important things to do than bicker and pick over the little picayune crap like that. We are involved in two major wars. We are in the throes of an economy struggling to recover. We face high unemployment and leaders who just don't seem to get it.
We need to stop looking to the Capitol & the Capital, and start looking at our schools, our towns, cities, communities - each other. We have only ourselves to blame for our choices, and we are the ones who must hold ourselves and each other accountable for the bad ones, and reward for the good ones. Right now, there's far too much pointing at someone else.
Which also means that it falls to ourselves and our communities to HELP each other back up again. If your neighbors' house is afire, are you going to stand there and gape, or are you going to get in the bucket brigade? We used to do that, y'know. Now, you call 911 and watch until the fire department and the press get there, then you give an interview.
It ain't all about "you," Sports fans. When enough people get that, we'll start moving forward again.
You want "change"? CHANGE the way YOU move through the world, rather than waiting for someone else to change the world to suit you.
