If you play TMO 2.1 get the radar waring receiver(RWR) when it becomes available as when it is usable is when some IJN ships and planes start to use radar but they cant see yours they had very poor RWR abilities in real life so you need not worry about them finding you by radar unless you are really close IIRC like 8000 or 9000 yds in ideal condtions. To play it safe when you have the RWR and you get the line on the map you can safely say that their radars range and their RWR range is half the length of your line on the map our RWR was outstanding.

So dont dwell on them spotting radar from any where near its max range they cant you can still get plenty of plotting data and be either dived or in line for your surface and have turned the radar off.

Basically pre late 43 dont even bother worrying about RWR at all they wont have it after that if you get an RWR line then cut the radar off (except for short sweeps) when the japs are about 10 miles away.Personally I have not had much issue with them spotting my RADAR sigs except for at fairly close range and only then mid 44 up and like I sadi at that range you'll already be in line for attack and either on the scope at 60ft or lurking on the top and using the TBT and wont be needing the radar anyway.

The Japanese radar has pretty low max range maybe 10-12 miles at max in ideal conditions accurately more like 8,000 to 9,000 yds fairly crappy. This thread will get WarnerVonnTopps attention you could say he is the man who knows when it comes to radar in game and in real WWII.IIRC it was found out afetr the war that Japanese RWR was generally rather poor mostly omnidirectional meaning that you know that some where inside the range of your RWR there is a RADAR wave but you have no idea where from short of it is within a given range. Our SD was the same way the real thing gave did not show up on the PPI.

Japanese RDF(radio direction finding) was pretty good but not there RWR both use a from of radio wave but very differently.
