As for a more modern US Navy sub well my good friends old man served on Boomers in the 70's and we used to ask him this as a joke..... the answer to how deep can a Benjamin Franklin Class submarine dive to?: "If I told you I'd have to go to Leavenworth for a long damn time or kill both of you boys if I answered that and I don't want to spend any time inside Leavenworth." but they can go fairly deep I don't know about 3,280 ft.
Wasn't it a George Washington class boat that lowered itself to the deep sea bed to tap soviet comms?
